COLUMBIANA – A 23-year-old Montevallo woman is facing up to 20 years in prison and a possible probation revocation after she was charged with allegedly distributing methamphetamine at a residence near a local middle school, according to the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force.

The Task Force arrested Kateland Michelle Hughes, who lists an address on Blue Loop in Montevallo, on Jan. 22 and charged her with one felony count of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance.

Drug Task Force Commander Lt. Clay Hammac said the charges came after Hughes sold methamphetamine to an undercover officer at a residence off Warrior Drive near Thompson Middle School in Alabaster.

When she was arrested by the Task Force, Hughes was on probation for a first-degree theft of property charge brought against her by the Montevallo Police Department in 2017. She now could have her probation revoked in the theft case.

In the theft of property case, Hughes allegedly stole more than $33,000 from the Huddle House restaurant between June 2015 and January 2016.

Unlawful distribution of a controlled substance is a Class B felony, and is punishable by up to 20 years in prison upon conviction.

As of Jan. 25, Hughes was being held in the Shelby County Jail without bond, and was set to appear in Shelby County District Court on Feb. 22.
