PELHAM – Pelham City Schools is hosting a community involvement meeting on Monday, March 5, to discuss a proposed program called the Green and Gold Initiative.

The meeting will take place at Pelham High School at 5:30 p.m. The goal of the Green and Gold Initiative is to promote community participation and pride, establish a culture of individual accountability among students and redefine what it means to be a PHS graduate.

The proposed program calls for Pelham graduates to become adult advocates and mentors for current students. Students would be required to keep electronic portfolios and be expected to successfully accomplish goals.

Students would be able to set goals in a number of areas including attendance, behavior, GPA, taking more rigorous courses, obtaining career tech credentials/certifications, community service, joining school clubs, gaining work experience and joining the military.

Coefield said the program would hopefully teach students more about soft skills, like knowing what is acceptable and unacceptable in a workplace environment and being accountable for their actions.

“We are building our own accountability system focused on individual accountability,” he said. “We want our graduates to be prepared, and the plan currently requires students to successfully complete their goals to participate in graduation.”

The community is asked to attend the meeting to learn more about the initiative.

Following the March 5 community meeting, the program will be reviewed at the March 19 Pelham Board of Education meeting. Another community meeting will take place on March 21 at 5:30 p.m. and the school board may vote on the initiative at its April 30 meeting.
