PELHAM – The City of Pelham and the Pelham Fire Department will join forces on Sunday, March 11, with the Pediatric Burn Foundation of America in support of Camp Conquest.

The tournament will take place at the Pelham Civic Complex at 11 a.m.

Broomball is very similar hockey – players take to the ice rink wearing tennis shoes instead of skates and they use sticks with triangular paddles on the ends to hit a ball into a hockey goal post.

Money raised will be donated to Camp Conquest. It was founded in 2000 with the mission of responding to the needs of pediatric burn survivors. The camp provides a five-day, four-night stay in rustic cabins at Children’s Harbor in Alexander City. Campers participate in outdoor activities that improve self-esteem, confidence, physical abilities and range of motion. Children are able to establish friendships, learn essential values and leave with an overall sense of well-being.

Through donations, children 6-17 years old who have been hospitalized with burn injuries may be invited to attend camp at no cost to the camper or family.

Camp Conquest board member and retired PFD captain Ricky King said 50 children attend the camp and are allowed to bring a friend or sibling with them to help them feel more comfortable.

“The biggest advantage is that the kids get to enjoy summer camp with other people who are like them and not feel self conscious about any scars, or get asked questions about what happened,” King said.

Entry fees for the broomball tournament will benefit Camp Conquest. Go to pelhamalabama.gov/554/Camp-Conquest to register a team. The cost is $200 per team of 10 people.

King said team registration to participate in the tourney are ongoing.

Tickets to attend the tourney are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
