Briarwood wins wild game with walk-off against Calera

NORTH SHELBY – While Briarwood and Calera combined for 26 hits in a softball matchup at Briarwood Christian School on Monday, March 5, it was just one of those hits that actually made the difference.
Trailing 11-10 already in extra innings, Briarwood came to the plate in the bottom of the eighth needing one run to extend the game and two runs to pick up the win.
With a runner automatically placed on second in extra innings, a leadoff double from Riley Coyne immediately tied the game at 11 and put the Lions in business with the go-ahead runner now scoring position.
An intentional walk to Daryl Deeter during the next at bat put runners on first and second with no outs recorded in the inning.
That’s when Jaddin Glenn stepped to the plate.
After fouling off the first pitch, Glenn took the next pitch she saw and hit a fly ball to right field that found the ground, which gave plenty of time for Coyne to round third base and come home for the walk-off 12-11 win.
It capped off an exciting game that featured runs in all but two innings for each team. The Lions scored runs in every inning but the sixth and the seventh, while the Eagles brought runs home in every inning but the fourth and the seventh.
Calera made a statement early in the game that its offense was ready to go thanks to four runs crossing the plate in the top of the first inning.
The Eagles took advantage of two walks, an error, a ground out RBI and three singles to bring home all four runs.
Briarwood’s offense wasn’t far behind in the early going as a single from Leah Coleman to start the inning and a triple from Lydia Coleman in the next at bat led to a two-run inning to cut into the early deficit.
Calera went on to add three combined runs during the next two innings, scoring in three in a row to start the game, but the Lions posted runs during the next four innings to give them at least one run in the first five innings of the game.
Heading into the top of the sixth inning, Briarwood held a one-run 10-9 lead.
The Eagles, however, were able to take advantage of base running and an error in the inning to tie the score at 10-10. With Michaela Landrum on first after hitting into a fielder’s choice, Meaghan Marfice stepped to the plate and hit a hard ground ball to second base.
The ball was mishandled and an error allowed Landrum to score after she had stolen second and third base throughout the last two at bats.
After a scoreless bottom of the sixth and entire seventh inning, the game was sent to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Calera was able to take advantage of Madison White being placed on second.
With two outs in the inning, Marfice singled to the shortstop and was able to drive in the go-ahead run to give the Eagles an 11-10 advantage.
Unfortunately for Calera, that one run wasn’t enough thanks to Coyne’s double and Glenn’s single in the bottom half of the inning that sent Briarwood home as winners.
Anna Donohue ended up leading the Lions at the plate thanks to a 2-for-4 effort that included a triple, three RBIs, one walk and one run scored.
Coyne also had an impressive game offensively thanks to two doubles. She finished the game 4-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Glenn was also batted 1.000 at the plate, going 3-for-3 with one RBI, two walks and two runs scored. Six total Briarwood players picked up a hit and seven had at least one RBI.
Alyssa Clark led the Eagles by going 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. Marfice had a solid showing as well, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, one walk and one run scored.
