PELHAM – Residents will have a chance to declutter their homes by disposing of unused electronics and heavy trash items during the city’s Spring Cleanup Day on Saturday, April 7.

Residents will have the opportunity to discard items not normally picked up by Advanced Disposal. All items need to be curbside by 6 a.m. on Saturday, April 7.

No item may weigh more than 300 pounds or be more than 6 feet long. Items are to be placed no further than 4 feet from the curb and away from overhead obstacles.

Acceptable items include: Grills (gas or propane tank removed), push lawnmowers (not riding, with gas tank removed), paint cans, furniture, mattresses, vacuum cleaners, auto interior parts, picnic tables, dismantled swing sets, bicycles and general debris.

There are special handling instructions for disposing of paint cans. Paint cans must be set aside from other heavy items for inspection. The tops of cans must be removed — tops can be set next to cans. The paint must be hardened or dry. Paint cans with liquid paint or not dry must be filled with cat litter.

Unacceptable items include: Refrigerators, televisions, freezers, stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers, hot water heaters, tires, oil, batteries, engine blocks, window air conditioning units, riding lawnmowers, bug spray and paint cans with liquid paint. Needles or medical waste is also not accepted.

No hazardous waste, radioactive, volatile, corrosive, highly flammable, explosive, biomedical, infectious, biohazardous, toxic or listed or characteristic hazardous waste as defined by federal, state, provincial or local law or any other regulated waste will be accepted.

The Shelby County Landfill is waiving dump fees on this date for residents dropping off items at the landfill.

ProTec Recycling will be at Pelham City Hall from 8 a.m. to noon to provide free electronic recycling for residents with two exceptions – hard drive shredding and CRT monitor recycling are $10 each. No televisions will be accepted at this event.

Acceptable electronic items include PC’s, laptops, tablets/cell phones, monitors, cable boxes, cables/wires, printers, modems/routers, rechargeable batteries, gaming systems, CD/VCR/DVD players and more.
