ALABASTER – On back-to-back nights, Thompson Softball gave up the deciding runs in the fifth inning, as the Warriors fell to Hoover, 12-10, and Spain Park, 5-1, during the week. The losses snapped a 10-game win streak.

Thompson (20-5) and Spain Park (21-3) were knotted 1-1 through four innings Wednesday, March 21, when Kate Campbell led off the inning with a single for the Jags and scored the eventual winning run on a hit by Caroline Kendrick.

Spain Park went on to add a run in the sixth on a sac fly by Caroline Wooley and two in the seventh on an Annabelle Widra double.

The Warriors’ only run March 21 came in the bottom of the first inning. Kindall DeRamus doubled to lead off the inning and Lauren Haskins drove her in with a single in the next at bat.

Spain Park evened the score in the top of the second when Imani Rogers scored on an error at short.

Thompson was held to three hits in the final six innings and a total of five in the game, led by Haskins’ 2-for-3 performance. DeRamus, Mikayla Touhey and Bailey Whitfield each had one hit.

Bailey Bowers led Spain Park with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, while Kendrick was 2-for-3. Widra (10-2) recorded the complete-game win pitching, allowing one unearned run off four hits. She struck out five.

Whitfield (10-3) recorded her second-straight loss, allowing three runs off five hits through six innings of work in the circle.

Hoover 12, Thompson 10

On Tuesday, March 20, Thompson and Hoover combined for 20 runs through the first three innings, but a two-run fifth inning was the difference for Hoover to win the Class 7A, Area 5 match up, 12-10.

Madison Bubel led the Warriors with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate and drove in seven runs, beginning with a two-RBI single in the top of the first inning to put Thompson in front 2-0. Hoover evened the score in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of a pair of errors to push two tuns across the plate.

Both teams scored five runs in the second inning. Lauren Cabiness was hit to lead off the inning for Thompson and scored on a triple by DeRamus. Three batters later, with two outs and runners on the corners, Bubel scored two more with a single to right. Touhey also had a two-run single in the inning to put Thompson up 7-2.

Six of Hoover’s first seven batters in the second inning reached on base hits, including an RBI single by Harper Niblett, and two-run singles by Campbell Hecklinski and Madeline Harris to tie the game, 7-7.

In the top of the third, Bubel delivered a bases-loaded double to center field to drive in DeRamus, Haskins and Allie Miller, which regained the Warriors’ lead, 10-7. Miller, DeRamus and Haskins (2-for-5 hitting) finished the day with three, two and two runs scored, respectively.

Hoover once again tied the game, this time in the bottom of the third on a three-run error at second. The Bucs then took the lead, 12-10, in the fifth inning, scoring two on a two-out error at third base. Mallory Mus and Caroline Nichols, who scored on the play, previously singled to reach base.

The Warriors were retired in order in the sixth and seventh innings.

Madison Holtzapfel started the game but was chased in the second inning after allowing seven runs. Whitfield recorded the loss with 4 ⅔ innings of relief work, allowing five unearned runs off four hits and two walks. She struck out four.

Thompson will return to action Monday, March 26 in Gulf Shores.
