ALABASTER – Fans of smooth jazz will again have a chance to enjoy smooth sounds in the fall air this year, as the city is working with the Alabaster Arts Council and the Shelby County Arts Council to continue a musical tradition in the city.

During its March 26 meeting, the Alabaster City Council voted unanimously to provide $1,500 to help fund the 2018 Jazz in the Park event, which will be held on Oct. 7 on the municipal lawn next to the Alabaster Senior Center and Alabaster City Hall at 1953 Municipal Way.

The event is scheduled to take place from 6-9 p.m., and is tentatively set to feature BlendJazz and Phil Denny.

Through an agreement between the three entities, the Alabaster Arts Council and the Shelby County Arts Council will each provide $1,750 to help fund the $5,000 event.

Jazz in the Park is free to the public.

This will mark the third straight year Alabaster has hosted the Jazz in the Park event, which draws dozens of visitors each year and is presented by Magic City Smooth Jazz.

“The collaboration with Magic City Smooth Jazz is turn key, meaning all aspects of booking, talent, professional staging, etc. are taken care of by the organization,” read the city’s resolution to provide funding for the event, noting Magic City Smooth Jazz’ mission is to “expose and engage audiences in culturally underserved communities to various styles of jazz music.”

In the past, food trucks have been on site for the concert, and parking was available at City Hall, the Senior Center and surrounding areas.
