Shelby County continues to have four teams that look to be legitimate contenders for a state championship this season and all four were ranked in the latest ASWA softball poll with three of the four being top-five teams.

All three of the county’s Class 7A teams were found in the standings, as Spain Park highlighted the group at No. 2, followed by Thompson at No. 3 and Oak Mountain at No. 8.

The Jags and Warriors have split two games this season, while Spain Park has also split two one-run games with Oak Mountain to show the closeness of each team’s talent.

Spain Park, now 29-5 this season, has now won four games in a row by a combined 52-2. The Jaguars are also a perfect 5-0 in area play with one area game against Oak Mountain separating them from a regular-season area championship that would allow them to host the area tournament.

The best record in the county goes to the Thompson Warriors, who have now won 13 games in a row to improve to 33-5 this season. Sitting at 3-1 in area play, Thompson has area games against Hoover and Tuscaloosa County remaining.

Oak Mountain has lost two consecutive games by one run after falling to Spain Park 3-2 and Chelsea 2-1 since the last rankings were released. With games against Huffman and Spain Park still left, the Eagles still have a shot at the regular season area championship.

The Helena Huskies might be the best team in Class 6A this season and currently sit at No. 5 in the rankings. Sitting at 21-5, the Huskies have won nine games in a row and finished area play a perfect 4-0 against Chelsea and Pelham.

Calera, Chelsea and Shelby County were three local teams that received votes for a spot in the standings, but just missed out. The Eagles are 14-8 this season, while the Hornets are 10-13 overall and the Wildcats are 12-3.
