Manuel Leroy McCartney, (“Paw Paw”), age 88, of Siluria, passed away Sunday, July 1 in Clanton.

Manuel grew up in Siluria. At fifteen years old, Manuel went to work at the Siluria Cotton Mill. There, he became involved in mill sports: baseball, basketball and golf, but he loved baseball most of all. After playing for the mill baseball team, he became coach of the Siluria Little League Giants for many years.

He had a positive influence on many of the youth of the city. At the age of seventy-five, he retired from the city of Alabaster. Two of his biggest passions were the Atlanta Braves and the University of Alabama football.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Bessie; father, Frank; wife, Joyce; son, Manuel Leroy Jr., and Gary; seven brothers; and one sister.

Manuel is survived by daughters, Gail (Harold), and Darlene (Phyllis); sons, Chuck (Debbie) and Joey (Lynn); brother, James “Mousey” of Pineville, Louisiana; sister, Jessie of Alabaster; grandchildren, Jason, Jaime (Lane), Michael (Lisa), Chuck, Maggie, Carson, Laura (Sean), Andy (Andi), Jimmy (Shelia), Christy, Jessie and Keri; and great-grandchildren, Tori, Tripp, Amelia, Ethan, Colton, Austin, Olivia and Brody.

Visitation was on Thursday, July 5 from 6-8 p.m. at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo). His funeral service was held Friday, July 6 at 11 a.m. at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo). Graveside services followed at Elliottsville Cemetery with Bro. Allen Foster officiating. Randy Durett, Roy McMullin, Johnny McCartney, Lee Adams, Lane Adams and Chuck Bordeaux served as pallbearers. Don Bunn and Tripp Adams were honorary pallbearers.
