New, larger Legacy Gymnastics facility opens

PELHAM – It has always been Brianna Mitchell’s dream to own a gymnastics facility. That dream became reality on June 19 with the opening of a newly built Legacy Gymnastics facility at 260 Applegate Parkway, across the street from Pelham Ridge Elementary.
“After 11 years in a rented space, I noticed that we could sustain on our own,” Mitchell said. “Being able to own a facility is something I’ve always wanted to do.”
The new, roughly 18,000-square-foot facility was built from the ground up. The gym itself is 15,000 square feet, which is a big upgrade from the old facility that was a total of 10,500 square feet. Of that, 8,500 square feet was gym space.
The new gym is separated into two areas – one for recreation and the other for competitive training. It also includes an upstairs viewing area for parents. Mitchell said the gym is already seeing growth at its new location also.
“We have about five to six parents calling everyday asking about signing their child up for classes,” Mitchell said.
Classes range from a Mommy and Me class for mothers and children starting at 18 months and goes up through high school age. Legacy Gymnastics is one of the few facilities that has competitive teams for boys and girls. The age for the competitive teams starts around 6 years old.
The gym has four competitors – Cami Weaver, Marion McMillan, Robyn Beeman and David Horton – who are eligible to be recruited by college teams.
As of right now, Legacy Gymnastics has a total of more than 300 students between its recreational and competitive classes. And for the first time, the gym is partnering with Pelham Ridge Elementary to offer an afterschool program for students.
Mitchell said students who are a part of the school’s afterschool program will have an opportunity to participate in a gymnastics class at 3:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday.
“We have arranged with the school to allow our gymnastics teachers to walk over to the school to pick up the students for class,” Mitchell said.
The program costs $70 per month for a class one day per week. Mitchell said students will attend class one day per week and on the other days they will remain at the school’s after school program. Pelham Ridge students will receive a 10 percent discount on class and there’s a 20 percent sibling discount.
A larger facility also means having a party room for birthday parties. Twice a month on Fridays, the gym has a Parents Night Out class from 6:30-9:30 p.m. The gym also hosts camps and clinics, for which participants don’t have to be registered for a class to participate in.
