COLUMBIANA – The Shelby County Commission received its first projection for the Fiscal Year 2019 budget at its meeting on Monday, July 23.

Growth of 1.2 percent projected by Chief Financial Officer Cheryl Naugher would put the county’s general fund budget at about $58.5 million for FY 2019, compared to the FY 2018 budget of about $57.8 million and FY 2017 actual revenue of $58 million.

“I really feel like it could be higher than that,” Naugher said about the projection. “It’s a conservative estimate.”

Some of the county’s largest revenue categories detailed in the projection included about $14.6 million for property tax on real property ($14.4 million in the 2018 budget), $15.7 million for county sales and use tax ($15.4 million in 2018) and $4.4 million for property appraisal update ($4.3 million).

The Commission will meet with department heads in the coming weeks before a budget for the next fiscal year is presented for a vote.

In other business, the Commission:

•Approved a resolution for Cost of Living Adjust Compensation Action. Full-time county employees and applicable elected officials who work from Aug. 1-31 will receive 3 percent of their annual rate of pay.

•Heard that a public involvement meeting regarding improvements to the possible Cahaba Beach Road project is scheduled for 4-7 p.m. on Aug. 7 at Liberty Park Elementary School in Vestavia Hills.

•Approved a digital information cooperative agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation.

•Approved an authorizing grant application resolution for Clastran, and a separate resolution authorizing local match funds for the public transportation program.

•Approved a permit for public road usage by Jesse Creek Mining LLC at Shelby County 260 and Shelby County 270 near Montevallo.

•Approved bid awards for plant mix, asphalt and chlorine.
