PELHAM – South City Theater is reviving an audience favorite, “Sylvia,” by A.R. Gurney for six performances beginning Aug. 10.

The show will run Aug. 10-18. Tickets are $16 general admission, and $13 for seniors 60 years and older and students under 18.

South City Theatre performed a one hour cutting of this play in 2012 that won the Best in Show at a state festival and then went on to represent Alabama at the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC).

“Sylvia” is a modern romantic comedy about a marriage and a dog. Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after 22 years of raising children in the suburbs. Greg’s career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate’s career as an English teacher is beginning to offer her more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park—or that has found him—bearing only the name “Sylvia” on her name tag.

A street-smart mixture of Lab and Poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. And Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn’t understand the relationship between man and dog. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy. What turns things around? Find out when you see “Sylvia.”

Ashley Richardson, playing the title role, won a “Best Actress” award at the state level and a coveted “Outstanding Acting Achievement” award at SETC.

“South City is delighted to have Ashley back onstage in this hilarious role for the full version of the production under the direction of JJ Marrs,” said Sue Ellen Gerrells, South City Theatre’s artistic director.
