PELHAM – The construction of a new field house at Pelham High School is expected to be completed shortly after the start of school announced Pelham City Schools Superintendent Scott Coefield at the school board meeting on Monday, July 30.

Coefield said the $3.1 million facility is expected to be completed near the end of September. He said multiple rain delays caused the opening date to be pushed back.

Athletic Director Kim Kiel said the roughly 17,500-square-foot field house will be multipurpose and multifunctional. It will include 10 yards of indoor turf that is connected to the weight room. Kiel said the space will be available for use by all sports programs.

“This facility will provide an opportunity for multiple groups to train at one time,” Kiel said. “While one group is doing agility training on the turf, another group can be lifting weights.”

The facility will also include a training room, football locker room, coaches’ offices, equipment room, laundry facilities and meeting rooms.

Kiel said the school’s current field house, which is about 9,500 square feet, does not meet the needs of the school adequately.

“It’s a smaller field house and the teams have to go in shifts to use the facility,” she said. “Some go really early in the morning and some others have to go late in the evening.”

Once the new field house is complete, Kiel said attention will shift to renovating the current field house for the school’s track and field and soccer programs.

“This is a very exciting time for PHS athletics,” she said. “To be able to provide all of our sports programs with their won space is really an accomplishment.”
