BESSEMER – Bessemer City High School’s Brandon Basave kicked a 27-yard field goal with 1:27 remaining in the game to give the hosts a 16-14 win over Spain Park on Friday, Aug. 31.

The game was a frustrating one for the Spain Park offense, which could not manage to reach the 200-yard mark and was held to one score until late in the fourth quarter.

Still, a 15-yard touchdown run by Jalen Henderson with 3:41 on the clock in the final period gave the Jaguars (1-1) their first lead since early in the game, before Bessemer City responded with what would turn out to be the game-winning drive and field goal.

SPHS scored the game’s first points on a four-yard run by Henderson just over two minutes after the opening kickoff, and Trevor Bernier was good on both of his point-after attempts in the game.

Henderson finished the game with 26 carries for 108 yards and his team’s only touchdowns.

Bessemer City scored on a 17-yard run by Rishard Densmore about four and a half minutes later, and then the Purple Tigers (2-0) took the lead on a sack of Spain Park quarterback Mason Pronk that produced a fumble recovered and returned for a touchdown early in the third quarter.

Bessemer City outgained Spain Park 221 yards to 193 yards, though the Purple Tigers had only 14 yards passing on one completion in five attempts.

Spain Park’s Mason Pronk completed 11 passes in 18 attempts for 79 yards. His favorite target was Kameron McDaniel, who caught four passes for 35 yards.

Jacob Jenkins caught one pass for 39 yards.

SPHS held a slight edge on first downs, 13 to 11.

Each team had two turnovers.

Dre Robinson Jr. led the Spain Park defense with 10.5 tackles, and Richard Moses had five tackles and an interception.

Bernier averaged 44 yards on three punts.

The Jags follow up the loss with their first region game of the season, at home against Vestavia Hills on Sept. 7.
