PELHAM – A Birmingham man who was recently acquitted in the shooting death of a Hoover veteran now faces a first-degree robbery charge in Pelham.

Ahmad Johnson, 20, who lists an address on 13th Street SW in Birmingham, was arrested by the Pelham Police Department on Sept. 5.

According to court documents, on Jan. 1, 2016, Johnson did use force or threaten the imminent use of force against the victim with the intent to overcome the victim’s physical resistance or to escape with stolen property. Johnson was armed with a handgun during the crime, according to court documents.

He was allegedly attempting to steal U.S. currency, an android cell phone and a key fob.

In addition to the robbery charge, Johnson also faces a second-degree theft charge and is currently being held in Shelby County Jail on $255,000 bail.

According to Johnson’s bond recommendation, the Shelby County District Attorney requested his bond be set at $250,000 for the robbery charge because “being at large will pose a real and present danger to others or to the public at large.”

“The defendant brandished a pistol in demanding the stolen property from the victim, and then led officers on a high-speed chase through Shelby and Jefferson counties,” according to the bond recommendation. “The defendant knows where the victim and his family live.”

Johnson faces a maximum sentence of 99 years to life in prison if convicted. The DA considers him a flight risk due to the possible prison sentence.

In April, Johnson was found not guilty in the January 2016 shooting death of Mike Gilotti, a 33-year-old Hoover veteran, husband and father of two boys. Gilotti was fatally shot in the early morning hours of Jan. 5, 2016, when he was leaving his Lake Cyrus home to go workout at the YMCA.

Shelby County Judge Daniel Crowson Jr. is assigned to Johnson’s case.
