New THS fieldhouse opens to students

ALABASTER – The Thompson High School football team has been honing its skills in new confines over the past couple of weeks, as the Alabaster Board of Education recently obtained its certificate of occupancy for the school’s fieldhouse.
ACS received clearance to occupy the facility after the state building inspector signed off on it following an early-September inspection.
The occupancy clearance came about a month after the state building inspector signed off on the school’s new 5,293 Warrior Stadium, clearing the way for the school to host its first home football game of the season against Oak Mountain on Sept. 14.
The stadium’s fieldhouse is about 58,000 square feet, and contains a 30,000-square-foot indoor turf practice field, a large weight room, the football team’s locker room, locker rooms for the school’s spring sports such as soccer, track and tennis, coaches’ offices, team meeting rooms, a sports medicine area and more.
The doors near the football locker room open onto a covered ramp leading directly onto the field.
With the opening of the fieldhouse, construction crews are nearly done building facilities on the new THS campus. Crews are still finalizing work on the school’s track facility, baseball and softball fields, said ACS Superintendent Dr. Wayne Vickers. The Chilton Contractors company is set to widen a portion of Kent Dairy Road to allow the back entrance to the school campus to open to traffic in the coming weeks, he said.
After the Oak Mountain game on Sept. 14, the THS football team will travel to Tuscaloosa County on Sept. 21, host Spain Park on Oct. 5, host Vestavia on Oct. 12, travel to Mountain Brook on Oct. 19, host Hewitt-Trussville on Oct. 26 in an ESPN2-televised game and travel to Crestview, Florida, on Nov. 1.
