ALABASTER – Students and employees in the Alabaster City School System were determined to carry on with the city’s homecoming traditions the week of Oct. 8-12, even overcoming inclement weather effects from a major hurricane.

When the threat of severe weather forced the school system to cancel its annual homecoming parade on the night of Oct. 10, each school brought its float to the area surrounding Warrior Stadium two hours before Thompson took on the Vestavia Hills Rebels on the night of Oct. 12.

Judges reviewed the floats while they were on display near the stadium, and announced the following awards during the football game:

-Best overall: Thompson Middle School

-Best class float: Thompson High School juniors

-Most creative: Meadow View Elementary School

-Best use of theme: Thompson Intermediate/Alabama Bicentennial float

-Most spirit: Creek View Elementary School

During a pep rally before the game, Thompson High School named TJ Armstead as the 2019 homecoming king, and Sydney Ferguson was named the homecoming queen during the football game.

The city was planning to have a community pep rally at Warrior Stadium after the Oct. 10 parade, but was also forced to cancel it due to weather. ACS is planning to reschedule the community pep rally in advance of the Warriors’ Oct. 26 matchup with Hewitt-Trussville, or before the Warriors’ first playoff game in early November, but has not yet announced final plans for the event.
