WALKER COUNTY – The second of two inmates who escaped from the Childersburg Work Release Center on Oct. 23 has been recaptured.

Araujo Jr.

Burnett

Walker County sheriff’s deputies apprehended Jacob Larry Burnett, 39, around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, while responding to a report of a person breaking into a vehicle near Nauvoo. Burnette was arrested at the scene without incident and taken to the Walker County Jail.

Burnette and Mark Stephen Araujo, Jr., 39, escaped from the work release center in Talladega County on October 23. After the escape, a video taken at a Citgo service station in Calera on U.S. 31 shows Araujo and Burnett in a stolen white utility truck and making a purchase inside the business at 8:53 p.m.

Araujo was recaptured the next day, Oct. 24, in Marshall County by the Boaz Police Department. A tip led the officers to an apartment complex where they found and arrested Araujo without incident.

Burnett was sentenced to 18 months in July 2018 for third-degree burglary in Shelby County and Araujo is serving a 15-year sentence for a 2016 first-degree theft of property conviction in Walker County.

Araujo had a parole hearing date set for September 2019 and Burnett would have reached his end-of-sentence in December 2019.  Both men will now face charges for the escape and other offenses.
