ALABASTER – It was standing room only at the Alabaster City Schools board meeting on Nov. 15 since three large groups were recognized. Board President Adam Moseley presided and recognized Superintendent Dr. Wayne Vickers for presentations.

“There are so many positive things going on in our system,” Vickers said. “First is the Science Olympiad team from Thompson Intermediate and Thompson Sixth Grade. This group went to the University of West Alabama on Oct. 16 to compete against 12 teams and placed first. This is pretty awesome!”

Vickers said the competition categories included “Water Rockets,” “The Deep, Blue Sea,” “Starry, Starry Night,” “Cool It” and others.

“This group represented us well and we’re very proud of all of them and their leaders,” he said.

The second and third recognition included members of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee. Vickers explained that the boys and girls served as counselors for him and are chosen for two-year terms.

“They tell me everything that is good in their schools, and everything else!” he said with a laugh. “It can be as minor as a latch on a bathroom stall, but this is important, and something most of us would never know about. But when we do, we can fix it.”

The board first recognized and presented certificates to committee members from Creekview, Meadow View, Thompson Intermediate and the Sixth Grade Center.

Then the board recognized and presented certificates to committee members from Thompson Middle and Thompson High.

Following presentations and pictures, the board continued with its regular business. Members approved four student out-of-town trips, several change orders for current construction, financial documents from September and October and a list of personnel actions.

Before adjourning, members of the board were given opportunity to share anything of interest.

“During this Thanksgiving season I’m grateful for parents, employees and students who have made this a successful school year,” Vickers said. “We have the best school system in the state.”

Board member Linda Church said she was grateful that safety was good in the system.

“If a boy or girl get hurts, it negates anything else we do,” she said. “I’m grateful no children have been injured in our system this year. This is a good thing.”
