Alabama Speaker of the House Mac McCutcheon, R-Monrovia, has announced that State Rep. Corley Ellis, R-Columbiana, will serve as vice chair of the House Insurance Committee, which is tasked with handling all legislation pertaining to the state’s insurance industry and the consumers who utilize it.
“Though Rep. Ellis has served just two years in the Alabama House, he has already proven that he has the skills and abilities necessary to help lead such an important committee” McCutcheon said. “He has my full faith and confidence, and I know Rep. Ellis will use his new role to help make our already great state even better.”
Ellis said he is eager to being his new responsibilities when the 2019 regular legislative session convenes in March and appreciates the leadership opportunity offered by the speaker.
“I am both honored, and humbled by the confidence that Speaker McCutcheon has placed in me,” Ellis said. “I look forward to serving in this new leadership role and contributing to the work of the House Insurance Committee.”
Ellis was originally elected to represent District 41 in the Alabama House of Representatives in a 2016 special election and won his bid for reelection in 2018.
He previously served on the House Education Ways and Means Committee, the Financial Services Committee, and the Committee on Fiscal Responsibility, but committee assignments for the 2018 – 2022 quadrennium will not be announced until lawmakers meet in Montgomery for the organizational session in January.
Prior to his election to the House, Ellis served as a Shelby County Commissioner representing District 1 for 10 years, and was selected by his peers to serve as the chairman of the commission for 2 of those years.
He owns and operates Ellis Properties, Inc., a real estate brokerage firm in Shelby County.
