COLUMBIANA – Charlene Tucker might have a few things to learn about her new job as city clerk and treasurer, but she already knows Columbiana and many of its residents as well as her colleagues do.

Columbiana is Tucker’s hometown. It’s where her alma mater is—she’s a proud Wildcat from Shelby County High School’s class of ’88—and it’s where she and her husband of 31 years, Brad, decided to raise their three children, Bret, Jordan and Grace.

Applying for the city clerk position following longtime clerk Mark Frey’s departure in November was an easy decision for Tucker.

“It is an honor to serve the citizens of Columbiana by working with the mayor and council,” Tucker said. “During all the interviews that I have been in with the mayor, he tells everyone that he wants employees that have a passion for Columbiana. I want to see our city grow, and I’m excited to see the amazing things that are going to be happening here.”

Tucker earned her associate’s degree in business administration from George C. Wallace Community College in 1994 and her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Baker College in 2011.

She worked for the Shelby County Commission as an accountant for 11 years before applying for the Columbiana position.

“I’ve always lived here and just thought working for the city would be a great opportunity,” she said. “I have always worked in accounting, so I love the accounting part.”

Tucker said Frey has helped her become acclimated with the job and process payroll on the weekends while balancing his own new job as Alabaster’s city clerk.

“He has been amazing to help,” Tucker said, adding city leaders and staff have also made her transition smooth. “I have big shoes to fill.”

Despite the learning curve, Tucker said the job is enjoyable and full of new opportunities.

“Every day is a day to learn something,” she said. “It’s challenging, but I love a challenge. It has been fun.”

Mayor Stancil Handley said he has been impressed with how Tucker has handled her responsibilities thus far.

“She is a fine addition to our staff and represents our city well,” he said.
