ALABASTER – On Dec. 20, The University of Alabama Shelby County Alumni Association hosted a book signing event for the release of Glen Coffee Sr. and Glen Coffee Jr.’s recently released book entitled “There’s more to life than the pursuit of money” at the recently opened Siluria Brewing Company in Alabaster.
Glen Coffee is a name many college football fans remember, because he was a part of the University of Alabama Crimson Tide football team as a running back from 2005 until 2008. In early January 2009, Coffee made the decision to forego his senior season with the Tide and pursue an opportunity to play football at the professional level. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round.
In 2010, just one year into his NFL career, Coffee made a decision that left many scratching their heads as he decided to hang up his cleats to leave behind what many believed would’ve been a very successful career in the NFL. According to Coffee, God spoke to him about the path his life needed to take. This path, would not be by way of a running back dive, blast or toss sweep; rather, Coffee said that when God spoke to him through what he describes as a spiritual awakening, he made it very clear that the path for his life would be to go out into the world and spread the word of God.
After leaving the NFL, Coffee went on to become an inspirational speaker before joining the United States Army for four years as an Army Ranger, and even returning to the University of Alabama to complete his degree in 2016. The book follows Coffee’s journey from his hometown in Fort Walt Beach, Florida, during his career with the Tide and NFL, and throughout his four-year career in the military. Chapter 7 of their book is titled “Glen Finds Christ at Bama,” which reveals how the Holy Spirit started molding Glen Coffee Jr. for the path that God was preparing for him. The book is written to be an unbiased approach that is based on biblical truths challenging readers to look in the mirror and lament for Christ. Both Glen Coffee Sr. and Glen Coffee Jr. invite their readers to take an honest look at their own relationship with Christ and communicate with him, just like he communicated with them during the inspirational process of writing their book.
Glen Coffee Sr., a military veteran himself, had high praises for his son’s testimony and path. He stated that he couldn’t be more proud of his son.
“I’ve watched my own faith grow during my son’s path,” said Coffee Sr. He also said that he often finds himself taking notes and learning more each time he hears his son, and best friend, speak to listeners.
The event was held as a result of the hard work and organization efforts of The University of Alabama Shelby County Alumni Association. With about 400 active members, the Association’s mission is to promote the University of Alabama, assist in recruitment of students to the University of Alabama and raise money for scholarships for deserving Shelby County students to attend the University of Alabama.
To date, the group has endowed eight scholarships with more to come. Memberships are available for both individuals and families. Both alumni and non-alumni are encouraged to join the chapter.
“We welcome anybody who is a friend or supporter of the University of Alabama,” said Chapter President Jim Sasser. “I believe each of us should give a little something back to the university; whether it’s time, money or support. Our chapter allows supporters to do just that.”
