Mary “Detsy” Kiker

Mary “Detsy” Kiker departed this life and joined the love of her life in heaven Friday, Feb. 22.

Mary was dedicated to family. She enjoyed spending time with her “Bob”, her children and grandchildren and extended family.

She was born July 15, 1933 and grew up in Moundville. She graduated as Valedictorian of Hale County High School in 1951. She earned her BS in Education from the University of Alabama and taught with the Midfield City School System for 25 years.

Mary was an avid reader and loved dogs and was a resident of Sylvan Springs for most of her adult life. She was a life-long member of the Methodist Church and most recently a member of the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.

“Detsy”, as she was known to family and friends, was predeceased by her parents, Odette and Herbert Milstead, her husband of 56 years, Robert E. Kiker, Sr., “Bob”, and an infant daughter.

She is survived by her brother, Herbert Milstead (Barbara); and sister, Betty Savage (Billy); a son, Robert E. Kiker, Jr. (Karen); and daughter, Mary Beth Moses (Mark); seven grandchildren, Brad Kiker (Lauren), Adam Kiker (Jordan), Emily Moses, Kristie Sims (Tyler), Kimberly Kiker, Autumn Kiker and Jacob Moses; and four great grandchildren, Anna Margaret Kiker, Mykia Kiker, Paislee Kiker and Killiyan Sims.

She is survived by many dear cousins and one who was like a sister, Cullene Morgan Harper.

Funeral services will take place at Peoples Chapel in Hueytown on Saturday, March 2 at 11 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10 a.m.

Pallbearers will be Brad Kiker, Adam Kiker, Jacob Moses, Mark Moses, Josh Posey, Marc Mills and Robert McMullen.

The family is appreciative of the kindness of the staff of South Haven Nursing Home where Mrs. Kiker spent the last few weeks of her life.

Memoriams could be made to the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Pleasant Grove or Saint Mark United Methodist Church in Vestavia.
