HARPERSVILLE – Harpersville’s primary voting location will move from Town Hall to the Community Center following approval from the Shelby County Commission at its meeting on Monday, Feb. 25.

The town requested the move because the Town Hall location could no longer adequately accommodate the number of voters voting there, according to the Commission’s resolution.

“It’s a courtroom, it’s a chamber meeting room, it’s a party room, it’s everything,” Harpersville Mayor Don Greene said about the Town Hall facility.

The Community Center, which is across the street from Town Hall, should provide a more accommodating polling place, Greene said, including offering more parking and being more handicap accessible.

Upon approval of the resolution, voting for Precinct 5 will be held at the Harpersville Community Center, located at 39321 Alabama 25.

The change will take effect beginning with the scheduled March 3, 2020 Primary election. Any state special elections before then would also occur at the new site.

Greene thanked the Commission for the county’s financial and technical support in the construction of the Community Center, which was completed in late 2018.

“Certainly the Commission had a big part in that,” he said.

Shelby County Manager Alex Dudchock said Harpersville has offered the county some office space on the eastern end of the Community Center building (which also houses a library, senior center and storm shelter), and the space could be used to house behavioral health therapists once a strategic plan is completed for Chilton-Shelby Mental Health.

“We try to do our part; you’re doing your part clearly,” Dudchock said about cooperation between the county and Harpersville.
