Helena gets shutout win over Briarwood

NORTH SHELBY – Two Helena pitchers combined to throw a three-hit shutout as the Helena Huskies varsity softball team shutout in county opponent Briarwood 7-0 on Tuesday, March 12.

Starting pitcher Avery Barnett pitched two innings where she struck out three and allowed just one hit. Peyton Doriety then pitched the remaining five innings allowing just two hits and collected four strikeouts while also allowing no runs.

The Huskies offense collected six hits and scored all seven runs in the game in the first three innings to come away with the victory.

Helena got things started in the top of the first inning with a Julia Wilkins RBI single to score Chaney Handley to make it 1-0.

Later in the inning, Helena’s Torie White hit a two-RBI single to score Wilkins and Lexie Bullock to extend Helena’s lead to 3-0.

The next inning, Helena got two runners on base from a walk and an error. Megan Fortson then stepped to the plate and hit a line drive single to score Wilkins making it 4-0. Briarwood committed a total of five errors in the game.

Bullock then stepped in the batter’s box with two outs and hit a two-run home run to centerfield, giving Helena a 6-0 lead.

Helena tacked on one more run in the third inning when Kaysi Bargman scored as the score remained 7-0 through the final four innings.

Helena was led offensively by Bullock and White as both went 1-for-4 at the plate and finished with two RBIs. Wilkins, Fortson and Sara Ezekiel each had one RBI apiece.
