ALABASTER – Visitors to a popular Alabaster park soon will see new and updated playground equipment, after the City Council agreed to purchase the equipment during a mid-March meeting.

Council members voted unanimously during their March 18 meeting to purchase a pair of Playbuilders playground structures for the park, which is off Warrior Drive between Thompson Middle School and the old Thompson High School.

The city paid $24,282 through the Sourcewell Purchasing Cooperative for the new equipment, which came in lower than expected, said Alabaster Parks and Recreation Director Tim Hamm. Funding for the equipment was included in the Parks and Rec Department’s 2019 budget.

Hamm said one piece of equipment will serve kids ages 2-5, and another will serve kids ages 5-12, and will replace the aging equipment currently at the park.

“It’s getting old and bad-looking,” Hamm said, noting it would cost about $16,000 to replace just the grates on the current equipment. “This will condense that playground and clean up the area and make it nicer.”
