ALABASTER — A crowd of Alabaster residents gathered at the Alabaster Senior Center on April 2 for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of a new pavilion.

More than 50 people were in attendance at the ceremony including Alabaster Mayor Marty Handlon, city officials and a large group of local seniors.

The project, which was approved last July, was funded through an agreement between the city and the county governments, each contributing $25,000 for an overall $50,000 budget for the project.

“We are very excited about our partnership with Shelby County and the city of Alabaster with the outdoor pavilion,” said Alicia Walters, senior and therapeutic manager for the Parks and Recreation Department.

Walters explained that the pavilion would provide the benefit of being able to host activities and events for seniors in an outdoor setting.

“When the weather gets cooler, we are looking at doing a gardening class, bingo and even some our seated exercise classes would be able to enjoy the pavilion,” she said.

Following the ceremony, the center hosted bingo and other games for the attendees with light refreshments served.
