Hoppin’ on the hunt: 10,000 Easter eggs collected at Pelham event

PELHAM – Cold temperatures on the morning of Saturday, April 20, didn’t stop residents from participating in the city’s annual Easter egg hunt at Pelham City Park.
Dozens of children lined the youth football with their Easter baskets in tow and ready to claim their portion of the 10,000 eggs on the field. Officers with the Pelham Police Department helped lay the eggs filled with candy and toys onto the field prior to the event, said Pelham Parks and Recreation’s manager on duty Scott Verner.
Verner said he was pleased with the turnout given the weather.
“I’m thankful for the police department for helping us out,” he said. “This continues to be a great event for kids. It’s something that all kids can be involved in.”
Children were split up by age for the hunt and it took only minutes for them to scoop up all the plastic eggs. The Easter Bunny was also at the event taking free pictures with families.
Sisters Sadie and Emily Watson said they liked meeting the Easter Bunny, but collecting Easter eggs was the highlight of the event for them. Their mother, Kayla Watson, said they have attended the city-sponsored event for the past six years.
“We’ve been coming every year since we moved here,” she said. “I have pictures of them out here getting eggs when they were tiny. This is when we take our Easter Bunny pictures too.”
Laura Jackson traveled from Louisiana to spend the Easter holiday with family. She said she liked how well-organized the event was.
“This is a nice family-friendly event and all of the kids had a blast,” she said. “Seeing their excitement was the best part for me.”
