ALABASTER — MVES held an event April 23 giving their second-grade students the opportunity to meet with several different professionals from a variety of jobs to learn more about their jobs and give them inspiration for their future career path.

There were several professionals present representing 12 different career paths including Alabaster Mayor Marty Handlon, farming, software engineering, military, eLearning design, police officer, nursing, broadcast news, a chef for Alabaster City Schools, firefighters, baker and office administration.

Each job was assigned a table in the school’s lunchroom and prepared a creative three-minute presentation for each small group of students. The students were asked to prepare questions for each table ahead of time.

“Is it a lot of fun being mayor?,” one student asked Handlon.

“It really is,” she responded. “The city provides a lot of services for the community that you may not even notice.”

Nedra Moore, owner of the bakery Creations Galore and Moore, had one of the most popular tables. She showed off some of the extravagant creations that she worked on from sugar flowers to a cake layered with edible 24 carat gold.

“Cake has a way of putting smiles on people’s faces,” Moore explained to the students. “It is hard work, but it is very rewarding.”

Every three minutes, the students changed tables ensuring that there was enough time for each group to meet with and learn about the various jobs. Throughout the event students enthusiastically tried on police, military and firefighting gear and eagerly learned about various other professions that they could potentially take on in their futures.
