Briarwood boys, girls advance to 2nd round with mercy-rule wins

NORTH SHELBY – For the No. 1 4A-5A boys soccer team in the state, it’s been a successful run through 2019 with just one loss on the season, and on a rainy Thursday, April 26, the Briarwood Lions continued showing that dominance with a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over Parker at home in the first round of the playoffs.
With the victory, the Lions advanced on to the second round of the postseason, where they’ll take on area foe John Carroll, who also won its first-round matchup 10-0.
Briarwood’s girls also picked up a strong win on the same night thanks to 10-0 mercy-rule victory over Jasper. At 3-10-1 overall, the Lions haven’t had the most successful season in school history, but nonetheless made the second round of the playoffs, which has become the norm in recent years.
For the boys, it was another stellar performance from University of South Carolina commit Logan Frost, who scored half of the team’s goals with five. The Lions also got goals from five other players, including several seniors, as the team celebrated senior night.
It took no time at all for the boys to get warmed up in their matchup, as Nick Badolato and Frost scored in the first five minutes of the game for a 2-0 advantage.
That was soon followed by two more quick goals from Bailey Morman and Jackson Stubbs to put Briarwood on top 4-0 in the first 10:30 of the matchup.
Close to seven minutes later, William Holder took a shot deep in the box and the hard-kicked ball eventually deflected off a defender and into the right side of the net for a 5-0 lead less than halfway through the opening period.
After a lull in scoring over the next 13 minutes of play, Frost took over the game in the final 10 minutes of the half. He scored back-to-back breakaway goals at the 9:02 mark and 8:06 mark to extend the lead to 7-0.
That was then followed by a deep shot right at the box line from 18 yards out.
He capped off four consecutive goals in the final 10 minutes when he got his third breakaway as the final seconds ticked off in the period. He eventually got into the box and with two seconds left ripped a shot that found the back of the net.
The goal was eventually waved off, but after the officials came together, they decided the shot was off in time to put the Lions up 9-0 at the half.
Needing one more goal to pick up the mercy-rule victory, the Lions worked on passing early in the second period, but eventually strung together some nice momentum up field and got a final goal from freshman Daniel Scharf to close out the 10-0 victory.
