Field Day ends school year on a fun note

PELHAM – Children at Pelham Oaks and Pelham Ridge elementary schools ended the school year on a high note as they participated in Field Day at their respective schools on Friday, May 17.
Pelham Oaks physical education teacher Ginger Aaron-Brush said the entire school of about 680 students participated in Field Day from 8:30 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. They played games, like sack races and distance throw, and jumped on inflatables, but the water games were by far the most popular.
“For me and for the kids, Field Day is a celebration of the school year,” Aaron-Brush said. “It’s an opportunity for students to spend time with their friends and teachers, relax, have fun and really just enjoy being kids.”
Aaron-Brush said the event was a collaborative effort between all of the P.E. teachers and the entire school.
“This was such a school collaboration,” she said. “From the lunchroom staff, custodial staff and everyone in between – this was truly a major schoolwide effort. Everyone deserves credit and has played a role.”
The event also required the help of 85 parent volunteers to oversee the activity stations, Aaron-Brush said.
Fifth-grader Lucas Kalba said the best part about Field Day is being able to hang out with his friends.
“It’s the last Friday of the school year and we get to be outside having fun,” he said. “It’s a fun way to end our last few days of school.”
The event also served as Kalba’s farewell to elementary school. Next school year he will be a sixth grader at Pelham Park Middle.
“I’ll miss you guys, but I’ll come back to visit,” he said to Aaron-Brush.
