PELHAM – Residents in Pelham and throughout Shelby County may see some familiar faces in the upcoming film “Safe Havens” that’s being produced by Pelham native Luis Abe Jim.

The independent film, which was shot throughout the county in cities such as Pelham, Alabaster, Calera and Montevallo, revolves around a group of college students as they face life’s twists and turns including domestic abuse, racial discrimination, sexual coercion and substance abuse. Jim, director of the film, said his wish is for the film to touch people’s lives and give them hope.

Three Wolves Pictures, Jim’s production and distribution company, has partnered up with Mera Film Studios and Alabama TV Entertainment to create this film.

While in Pelham, scenes were filmed in the city’s court room and police station. A few PPD officers and firefighters also nabbed some camera time and will appear in the film. Jim said the city was very helpful and accommodating during the process.

Scenes were also filmed at the Shell gas station in Alabaster that sits on U.S. 31 across from Shelby Baptist Medical Center, at a private residence off Smokey Road in Calera and in Montevallo.

An exact release date has not been determined yet, but Jim said it will be sometime in September 2020.

“We really wanted it to be a homegrown movie and for the community to feel a part of it,” Jim said. “We also used members of the community as extras in the film so you might see some local faces show up on screen. The movie is filled with Alabama talent in front of and behind the camera. We have the talent here so why not utilize it and provide opportunities within the state.”

Within the past few years, Jim said Alabama has been gaining more traction in the film industry as an ideal movie location.

“There are a variety of locations in Alabama, from bigger cities, to small towns and rural areas,” he said. “We have a lot to work with when it comes to talent, location and scenery. What we’re lacking is people willing to do the work.”

The movie will premiere at the Alabama Theatre and be available on streaming platforms. For updates follow Three Wolves Pictures on Facebook and Instagram.
