PELHAM – Pelham residents will have a chance to declutter their homes by disposing of unused electronics, heavy trash items and shredding un-needed documents during the city’s Fall Clean Up Day on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Residents will have the opportunity to discard items not normally picked up by Advanced Disposal by placing them curbside by 6 a.m. on Oct. 5. The Shelby County Landfill is waiving dump fees on this date for residents dropping off items at the landfill.

Paint cans must be set aside from other heavy items for inspection. The tops of cans must be removed and can be set next to cans. Paint must be hardened or dry. Paint cans with liquid paint or not dry must be filled with cat litter.

Unacceptable items include refrigerators, televisions, freezers, stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers, hot water heaters, tires, oil, batteries, engine blocks, window AC units, riding lawnmowers, bug spray, paint cans with liquid paint.

Hazardous waste, such as radioactive, volatile, corrosive, highly flammable, explosive, biomedical, infectious, bio-hazardous and toxic waste, is unacceptable. No needles or medical waste will be accepted.

Pro-Tec Recycling will be in the Pelham City Hall parking lot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to provide electronic recycling for residents. CRT Monitors are $10 each and flat panel monitors are free. Pro-Tec will also provide secure hard drive destruction for $10 per drive. Televisions will be accepted at this event.

The City has partnered with Shred-It to provide free document shredding for residents. Shred-It will be at Pelham City Hall from 9 a.m. to noon and there will be a six-box limit for the free shredding service.
