CALERA – The atmosphere at the Shelby County Industry Block Party on Monday, Oct. 7, was more laid back and relaxed than the usual Shelby County Chamber event.

Chamber investors sipped on locally made wine, enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and networked with professionals at the annual event that was held this year at Calera’s Corbin Farms Winery. Chamber CEO Kirk Mancer said the event served as an opportunity to thank the entities that partner with the Chamber throughout the year and the investors for doing business within the county.

“Working together works,” Mancer said. “We’re here to celebrate existing businesses. We want to make sure businesses stay and grow here.”

Mancer said the event takes place at a different venue every year to help showcase local businesses. While at the event, guests had an opportunity to take a short shuttle ride to Alabama Power’s Technology Application Center for a tour of the facility.

The TAC facility serves as a demonstration and test facility that “investigates ways to reduce production costs, improve energy efficiency and productivity while addressing environmental concerns,” according to Alabama Power’s website. The center also provides access to a fully stocked and operational test kitchen for those in the food service industry. Customers and potential customers can test the latest electric kitchen equipment before deciding to make a purchase. With advanced notice, Alabama Power can bring in requested equipment.

Alabama Power representative Alison Howell Steineker said the company cherishes its partnerships with the Chamber and other industry professionals.

“We’re working together to move the county forward,” she said.

In less than 2 years since 58 INC. was formed, Chad Scroggins, 58 INC. board member, said the economic development organization has already made an impact in the county through its partnerships with the Chamber and other entities.

“We’ve put in a lot of work to make this county better and I’m excited about what’s to come,” Scroggins said.
