Carrie McLean Valerius

Mrs. Carrie McLean Valerius, age 91, passed away Sunday, Oct. 27 in Hawkinsville, Georgia.

The visitation will be from 10-11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 2 at the First Baptist Church of Columbiana. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., at the church with Dr. Mike Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Pinelawn Gardens. Bolton Funeral Home is directing.

Mrs. Valerius grew up in Alabama, and was a missionary to Brazil with the Foreign Mission Board, SBC for 30 years. She and her husband Erling Valerius returned to the U.S. in 1992, and retired in Columbiana.

Before going to the mission field, Mrs. Valerius was a camp counselor, summer missionary, a high school Home Economics teacher, and a student at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Later, in Florida, she played the piano and taught Sunday School in the churches Rev. Valerius pastored. On the mission field, she taught her own children, taught Sunday School, played the piano, cooked many a meal for anyone in need, and housed missionary youth going to school.

Mrs. Valerius was a faithful member and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church Columbiana, and most recently at First Baptist Church Hawkinsville, Georgia, near her family.

Mrs. Valerius is survived by her daughters, Carol Ann McClung (Don) of Georgia, Janet Brewer (Ronnie) of Florida, Marian Hicks (Wade) of Ohio, Gail McKinley (Keith) of Kentucky, and Julia Wiley of Virginia; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters; and two brothers.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Erling C. Valerius.

The family is accepting flowers, but memorial gifts may be sent to the First Baptist Church of Columbiana designated for the Foreign Mission Board, SBC.
