Oak Mountain girls start season with win

NORTH SHELBY – Entering the season with redemption on their mind and one mission to accomplish, the Oak Mountain Eagles got off to a strong start to the 2019-20 girls basketball season with an impressive 50-38 home win against Mountain Brook on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
The Eagles scored at least 11 points in every quarter of the game and built a large lead going into the final quarter, which became too much for the Spartans to overcome.
A big reason for the success to start the season was the stellar play of seniors Hannah Edwards and Abi Brown. Edwards not only had a double-double, but did so with ease posting 16 points and a remarkable 15 rebounds. TO compliment her inside game, Brown caught fire from beyond the arc hitting four of her six 3-pointers on the night, which played a part in 16 points of her own.
Brown made two of those four 3-pointers in the opening quarter, as she posted six points to help lift Oak Mountain to a 13-point quarter. The Eagles also got four points from Edwards in the period, as well as two from Savannah Garrett and one from Abby Gordon.
Mountain Brook had its best offensive quarter of the first three periods in the opening frame, but the Spartans still only scored nine points, which allowed the Eagles to take a 13-9 advantage into the second.
The first quarter was just the beginning for the two seniors, as they went on to score ever Oak Mountain point in the second period.
Edwards, who missed her only two free throws in the first quarter, went 4-4 from the line in the second and made two baskets for eight points in the period, while Brown hit her third 3-pointer of the game to help the Eagles post 11 points in the quarter.
But the big difference in the second period was the defensive effort. Oak Mountain held the Spartans to just one made field goal and one free throw to help extend its lead to 24-13 heading into the halftime break.
Coming out of the half, Mountain Brook started forcing the Oak Mountain to earn everything at the free throw line with a more physical presence defensively, but the Eagles were up to the challenge.
They went on to make five of their eight free throws in the quarter and also got four points from Riley Sullivan to post 11 more points, while the defense held Mountain Brook to single digits again at seven points to take a 35-20 lead into the final period.
Mountain Brook ended up having its best quarter of the game in the fourth behind a 10-13 mark from the free throw line, which led to 18 points in the period.
But thanks to Brown’s five fourth-quarter points and four from Taniyah Smith, the Eagles were able to post their best quarter of the game as well at 15 points to pick up the 12-point win.
Smith finished the game with five points, while Sullivan added six. Eight total players scored for Oak Mountain in the win.
