FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Alabama Humanities Foundation recently presented two area teachers with the Jenice Riley Memorial Scholarship, which recognizes educators who have an extraordinary commitment to enhancing the quality of education in Alabama.

Amy Broadhead, who teaches fourth grade at Thompson Intermediate School, and Kim Hinds, who teaches fourth grade at Deer Valley Elementary School in the Hoover City Schools system, both received a $1,000 scholarship.

The scholarship is named for the daughter of former Gov. Bob and First Lady Patsy Riley who was a passionate teacher who fostered creativity and a desire to learn in her students, according to the award’s history, and she encouraged parent involvement and actively promoted better educational programs in her community.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to K-8 educators in support of history and civics-related projects in their schools and classrooms. The award aids teachers in attending a conference, purchasing classroom materials, or creating programs that enhance students’ understanding of history and civics.

Broadhead plans to purchase 450 backpacks and 450 pencils for her students to commemorate “Alabama Day” at Thompson Intermediate School. Hinds will purchase books about Alabama and a 17-inch by 21-inch map of the state as a resource for her students.

The teachers were honored along with fellow recipients at a special reception at Birmingham’s The Club on Oct. 7.
