CLANTON – The Helena Huskies’ varsity basketball teams improved to .500 on the young season with wins against Chilton County, as the varsity boys (1-1) picked up a 68-42 victory, while the varsity girls (2-2) won 52-20 on Friday, Nov. 15.

Kya Gardner got the varsity girls action started and was quickly followed by a basket from Brooklyn Oden that gave the Lady Huskies an early 4-0 lead. Marlie Giles followed by sinking the first basket of the night for Chilton but was then answered by a basket from Gardner. With baskets from Oden and Jessica Powell, Helena ended the first period with a 10-4 lead.

With a basket from Alana Scott, the Huskies ended the first half on a 9-0 run that sent Helena to the halftime break with a 29-6 lead over the Tigers.

Wilson again got things started in the second half with a basket and was joined shortly after by a basket from Montana Harris, while a pair or baskets from Jasmine Martins ended the Helena run. Oden lead the Huskies with 12 points on the night, while Martin led the Tigers with 10.

The boys then took the court after and proved to be a highly competitive contest during the early going as the Huskies jumped out to an early lead thanks to a pair of baskets from Daunte Cave and Andrew Fortson.

Another from Cave along with a free throw by JaKobi Albert and a three from Byron Davis made it a two-point game. Davis later added another three that swung the lead in favor of the Tigers, as Chilton County ended the first with an 11-10 lead.

Fortson wasted little time giving Helena the lead to start the second while a three from Brody Moss and another Huskies’ basket from LaDarrius Rice put Helena out in front, 17-11. Jay Quan Cohen ended the Helena run with a basket for the Tigers while another three from Moss sent Helena on a 12-9 run to end the period to make it a 32-22 Huskies’ lead at the half.

A three from Byron Davis was answered by a three from Mason Fitts, while a pair of late baskets from Josiah Ransom sent the game to the fourth and final period with Helena leading 52-33.

Ransom and Fitts each added threes for Helena to start the fourth while Smith answered with a basket from behind the arc for the Tigers. Chase Smith added another pair of threes for Helena down the stretch as the Huskies went on to close a 68-42 win over the Tigers.
