Helena boys and girls sweep Chilton County

HELENA – The Helena Huskies’ varsity basketball teams picked up wins against the visiting Chilton County Tigers on Monday, Dec. 9, as the girls knocked off the Tigers 72-12, while the boys won to the tune of 43-36.
Helena wasted little time jumping out to an early lead in the girls’ game, as a period opening free throws from Brooklyn Oden kick started an 8-0 Huskies’ run that eventually ended on a pair of baskets by Marlie Giles for Chilton that made it a four-point game.
Kya Gardner and Brianna Wilson answered for Helena, while a single basket from Giles saw the period end on an 8-2 Husky run that brought the period to an end with Helena leading 16-6.
Turnovers were the key to the second period, as the Huskies’ defense forced multiple Tiger turnovers resulting in 10 points on the fast break for Helena.
KK Busby came off the bench for the Huskies and posted nine second period points that were more than enough to outpace three points by Giles, as the Huskies went to the halftime break with a commanding 34-9 lead.
The third period of the contest saw Helena pull away in a big way, as the Tigers failed to make a basket during the period, while eight points from Oden led to a 29-0 third period for Helena, as the Huskies pulled away for a 63-9 lead.
Both teams chose to substitute deep into their respective bench during the final period, as the Helena run reached 38-0 before a buzzer-beating three from Destiny Peterson brought the run as well as the game to an end with Helena capping off a big 72-12 victory over the Tigers.
Jessica Powell led the Huskies with 15 points, 12 steals, four rebounds and a block, while Giles led Chilton County with nine points, seven rebounds and a steal.
Defense was the order of the night in the varsity boys action, as the two teams amounted a total of 17 first-period points between the two. Sergio Rodriguez and Shi Keem Laister combined to kick start things for the Tigers, but were quickly answered by a pair of baskets from Caden Pierce to knot the score at four.
A 6-6 tie came and went before a basket from Andrew Fortson gave Helena its first lead of the night, while starting a 7-0 Husky run that saw Helena end the first period with an 11-6 lead.
BJ Davis put an end to the run to start the second period, while starting a 6-2 Chilton County run that pulled the Tigers to within two. Brody Moss then put an end to that run and was followed by a three from Mason Fitts.
A three from Kellen Watkins further aided in sending Helena to the half sporting a 23-15 lead over the Tigers.
Daunte Cave got things started for Helena in the second half but was answered by a basket from Rodriguez. Cave returned fire but was answered this time by a basket from Gabe Trentman. But a three and a fast break basket from Pierce made it an 11-point lead for the Huskies.
The period was far from over, however, as the Tiger answered back with threes from Martez Stockdale and Jakaveon Bolding that cut the Helena lead to five.
A free throw from the Tigers, along with a basket by Josh Acreman to end the period made it a brand new game as the Huskies lead had been cut to two at 34-32.
Pierce continued his hot hand from beyond the arc to start the final period and put Helena back out in front by five, while Cave later made it a seven point Helena lead.
A basket from Bolding made it a five-point game with under two minutes to play, but with the Tigers forced to foul, Helena knocked down just enough from the free throw line to escape with a 43-36 win over the Tigers.
Cave and Pierce each put up 13 points for the Huskies, while Acreman led the Tigers with eight.
