Spain Park uses strong 2nd quarter to pull away from Thompson

HOOVER – Following a strong win against Madison Academy the night before to pull out a tight game, the Spain Park Jaguars returned to action a day later to host county foe Thompson on Tuesday, Dec. 10, and took advantage of dominant defensive play and a balanced offensive attack to pull away for a 52-22 victory.
The Jaguars held the Warriors to 10 points or less and built up a dominant lead before picking up the 30-point victory to improve to 10-2 on the season. Thompson fell to 6-4 on the season with the loss.
Early in the game, however, Thompson also showed its defense was ready for the tough road test. The Warriors were able to hold the Jaguars to just six points through the first six minutes of action to create a 6-6 tie with 1:20 remaining in the opening quarter.
But from that point to the halftime break, it was all Spain Park. The Jaguars were able to finally get something going on the offensive end and also let the defense spur easy baskets to fuel a 25-6 run.
Leading just 10-6 at the end of the opening quarter, Spain Park opened the second quarter at a much more torrid pace. The Jags got eight points from Sarah Ashlee Barker in the period, which was a big part of a 21-point quarter for the Jags.
She got help from five other players, who had at least one basket in the quarter, including a second 3-pointer on the night for Kamryn Corey and four points from Alanah Pooler.
Holding the Warriors to just one point in the quarter off a 1-2 mark at the free throw line, Spain Park was able to take a 31-7 lead into the break.
Coming out of the half, Spain Park was able to continue that strong run, starting the quarter on a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 37-7.
From there, the Jags finished off the strong quarter with another balanced scoring effort with six players combining for 14 points to help them take a 45-12 advantage into the final quarter.
With a running clock in the fourth, Spain Park was able to easily close out the game, but Thompson showed some offensive consistency in the game. The Warriors went on to score 10 points in the final frame, knocking down four of their five free throws in the period.
It was a strong finish for a growing team despite what happened throughout the first three quarters.
Spain Park was led by Katie Flannery with 11 points, while Barker added 10 points.
Thompson was led by six points from Alecia Reasor.
