Donald Dawkins
Columbiana

Donald Duaine Dawkins lived from Sept. 18, 1935, until Jan. 2, 2020.

His life was spent growing deep-rooted relationships with the Lord, his family and friends.

Donald grew up the seventh of 11 siblings born to Alvie and Wilma Dawkins in Walker County. He is preceded in death by brothers Charles Dawkins, Bruce Dawkins and Edwin Dawkins; and sisters Doris Brown, Mae Harrell, Betty Genry and Carolyn Jones. Surviving are sisters Nell Nelson, Faye Grizzell and Linda Phillips.

Donald started his own family with his surviving wife of 37 years, Landa. They had one child, Stephen, who survives along with his wife, Jamie. Donald discovered how full his heart could be upon the births of his grandchildren, Cole and Caitlyn Dawkins.

Donald worked hard all of his life, including for Westinghouse, the Shelby County school system, Dawkins Cleaning Service and Columbiana United Methodist Church, which he cleaned for almost 20 years. He made friends everywhere as people were drawn to his kindness, humility and big laugh. When not working at these jobs, Donald enjoyed singing to the Lord, gardening, Alabama football and walks with his yellow Lab, Molly.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6 at Columbiana United Methodist Church, and funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, also at the church, with Dr. Donnell Brown, Rev. Buster Timmons and Rev. Phillip Rush officiating.
