Pelham library to offer several February events

PELHAM – The Pelham Library has several upcoming events for the month of February, as several events will be free and open to the public.

Here is a list of the events in February in chronological order:

Natural Hand Scrub Workshop

Moisturizing hand scrubs are fun and easy to make and guests are invited on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. Create your own masterpiece, using your favorite natural scents with items from the kitchen cupboard such as sugar, spice and everything nice. They make great gifts too. Refreshments will be served. Seating is very limited. Material fee of $7 per person. Attendees must pay material fee when signing up for this event. Pelham ASL (American Sign Language) Meetup

This group will meet on Monday, Feb. 3 at 6:30 p.m. This is a social designed to bring together people from the deaf and hearing worlds together and for all of us to make new friends. Anyone is welcome who has an interest in sign language from beginner to expert. We especially encourage people to come who want to have fun while socializing with all sorts of different people! Refreshments will be served.

Game Day Premiere of Hedge Lord
Please join us on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. for an all ages game day as we welcome Huntsville, Alabama’s own toy makers Timbrook Toys to Pelham Public Library. We are excited for them to premiere their new handmade board game, Hedge Lord.

All’s Fair: A Bittersweet Wartime Romance Story

This group will meet on Monday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. using love letters sent between a young World War II soldier and his sweetheart at home in Birmingham, we journey through a relationship torn apart by distance and war. Presented by Catherine Champion from the Birmingham Public Library Archives Department. This is a free program, but seating is limited. Reserve a seat now by calling 205-620-6418.

Free Social Security Seminars

Wilson Financial Group will be hosting free seminars to the public on maximizing Social Security benefits on Saturday, Feb. 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and on Monday, Feb. 17 from 6-7 p.m. In these workshops, Philip Wilson will explain how to plan appropriately for retirement income along with how to maximize Social Security payments. He has been a practicing financial advisor since 1989 and has obtained many professional certifications in the areas of estate and long-term care planning. Wilson is passionate about helping seniors plan for their future after retirement. RSVP by calling 205-868-9297.

Understanding Medicare Seminar 

Does Medicare confuse you? Get answers at this seminar provided by Linda Reynolds, an independent insurance agent with 15 years’ experience on Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. and 6-7 p.m. The presentation simplifies complex issues such as the Medicare parts, enrolling and more. Hundreds age into Medicare each month in this area. It is a complex and confusing process for most individuals. Guests who attend this program will get the facts. The seminar is free and open to the public. For more information, please call the library at 205-620-6418.

Free Morning ESL Classes

English as a Second Language progressing to GED class will be held every Tuesday between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. This class is designed for all levels of English language learners-beginning through advanced and preparation for the GED exam. The class is free and administered through Central Alabama Community College. Free Evening ESOL Classes

Adult learners who seek to learn English are invited to these classes which are held every Thursday at the Pelham Public Library from 6-7:30 p.m. Classes will be taught by a tutor trained and supported by the Literacy Council. For more information or to reserve a seat, call The Literacy Council at 205-326-1925. Childcare is not provided.

Silent Book Club

Join the Pelham Public Library at Buck Creek Coffee House for a different kind of book club the second Thursday of every month from 5:45-7 p.m. No required reading, no awkward discussions of plot or the author’s intentions. Just bring any book you want for 45 minutes to an hour of silent reading. Schedule for each event:

5:45-6:15 p.m. Order a drink, introduce yourself, chat with like-minded book nerds. Maybe tell everyone what you are reading or a book you just loved (or hated).

6:15-7 p.m. Read quietly while enjoying a drink and or snack from Buck Creek Coffee.
