MONTEVALLO – They might not have felt old, but first-grade students in Andrea Lackey’s class at Montevallo Elementary School certainly looked the part on Friday, Jan. 24.

Students donned suspenders, glasses, sweaters—and a few even brought canes—in celebration of the 100th Day of School, a milestone Lackey and other teachers used as a theme for educational activities throughout the day.

Students Truett Littlejohn, Crissily Posey and Samantha Sheehan said they enjoyed playing math-equation bingo.

Posey and Whit Rachels said they also had fun with their friends on the special day.

After bingo, the class participated in a Jazzercise-style music activity and then enjoyed a mid-morning cup of pretend coffee (hot chocolate).

Students also took turns sharing papers they wrote about what life will be like for them as 100-year-olds.

Lackey even made a sign for her room that read “Mrs. Lackey’s Rockin’ Retirement Retreat.”

“We’ve always dressed up and done a writing piece—what they’re going to wear, what they will have. Some said they will sit on a beach all day,” Lackey said. “Every year, I try to add more fun stuff. This is the stuff they will remember.”

Kindergarten students at MES also dressed up as 100-year-olds, wrote papers about what they would be doing at that age and participated in math stations focused on the number 100.
