ALABASTER — Registration is underway for the 2020 Shelby County Senior Picnic, dubbed “Strummin’ and Yummin’,” and this year the entertainment will be none other than Taylor Hicks.

Hicks, a Hoover native who gained nationwide recognition by winning the fifth season of “American Idol,” is well known for his high-energy performances combining influences from rock, blues and R&B.

The Senior Picnic will be held June 4 at the Thompson High School Performing Arts Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Space is very limited this year because the PAC seats only 1,000 people,” said Senta Goldman, coordinator of community services for the Shelby County Commission. “We’ll have a full day of vendors, door prizes, games, food, fun and fellowship. A full day of action.”

All seniors ages 55 and up are invited to attend the event. Those who wish to attend should either be a resident of Shelby County or attend a church in Shelby County, Goldman noted. She advises anyone who is interested to not delay registration. Anyone who attempts to register after the venue is filled will be placed on a waiting list in case of cancellations.

“They should register now,” Goldman said.

Strummin’ and Yummin’ is sponsored by Alabaster City Schools, Shelby Volunteers in Service Inc., Positive Maturity, the Shelby County Arts Council, YMCA, Shelby County, M4A and the city of Alabaster.

To register, call 205-610-7994 or visit ShelbyAL.com by May 20. Those registering should indicate each name in their party. Anyone with transportation needs should notify the registration office at the aforementioned number.
