ALABASTER – Per usual, the Spain Park softball team is off to another strong start after sweeping through its games at the 2020 Thompson President’s Day round robin held at Alabaster’s Veteran’s Park between Saturday, Feb. 15, and Monday, Feb. 17.

The Jaguars took down Mortimer Jordan, Helena and Prattville to start 3-0 and gave up just three combined runs through the three games, while scoring 16 themselves.

A recap from each game is below:

Spain Park 3, Mortimer Jordan 0

In the first game of the tournament, Spain Park and Mortimer Jordan were in a pitcher’s duel for the majority of the game, but that changed in the bottom of the third when Alexis Anderson hit a bases-clearing double with the bases loaded to give the Jags a 3-0 shutout win.

Anderson was key in the win, going 1-for-1 at the plate with a double, a walk and three RBIs. She had the only hit, but the Jags drew three walks and an error to score the three runs.

Annabelle Widra was also key in the circle, pitching all four innings and allowing just two hits and one walk, while striking out six to lift Spain Park to a 1-0 start to the season.

Spain Park 5, Helena 1

Taking on county foe Helena in game two of the tournament, Spain Park put together the opposite performance, as the offense came ready to play early in the game, building off its late win in game one.

The Jaguars scored three runs in the first and two in the second to pick up a 5-1 win, despite being outhit 5-3.

In the top of the first, Spain Park put together two straight walks to start the game, then followed with back-to-back singles from Anderson and Lindsay Parker, each of which drove in a run. An error shortly after led to a third run crossing the plate for a quick 3-0 advantage.

After a quick 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half, the Jags came back to the plate and scored two more in the top of the second. It started with two more walks to Emma Jolley and Widra, before a groundout drove one home and then a single from Anderson drove another home to put Spain Park on top 5-0.

Helena answered with an RBI-single in the bottom of the second to put a run on the board, but that’s the only run the Huskies could score in the game.

Katherine Brown got the win in the circle for Spain Park after allowing just five hits and one run in four innings of action. At the plate, Anderson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Parker finished 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Spain Park 8, Prattville 2

After winning both games on Saturday, the Jaguars came back and took care of business with another win on Monday, Feb. 17, in a short three innings of work thanks to four runs in the first and third innings to take down Prattville 8-2.

In the opening inning, Spain Park sandwiched two singles around a lineout to put runners on the corners. That led to a sac fly from Anderson, an RBI single from Parker and a two-run home run from Mackenzie Thompson to put the Jags on top 4-0.

Spain Park added to that lead in the top of the third when Thompson picked up another RBI with a single, while Chloe Brittain laced a homer over the center-field wall to put the Jaguars on top 8-0.

Prattville tried to start a comeback in the bottom of the third, but the deficit was too much, as the Lions could only post two runs.

Thompson finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Brittain finished 1-for-2 with three RBIs. Parker and Anderson each added an RBI as well.

Ella Reed pitched all three innings and allowed just two runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
