Big second inning, Gillespie home run propel Eagles to win over Spain Park

NORTH SHELBY – Oak Mountain High School’s baseball team pounded out 12 hits, including six in a five-run second inning, on its way to a 9-4 win over Spain Park on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Spain Park opened up the game by building a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Chris Mancill brought home the first run on a sacrifice fly before Adam Wygle singled home a run and then later stole home.

The host Eagles (4-2) answered with one run in the bottom half of the first inning on a double by Cole Sester, and then took the lead for good with five runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Jake Rivers singled home the first two runs of the inning, Mitchell Pierce brought home another run on a fielder’s choice and then the biggest blow came on a two-run home run off the bat of Davis Gillespie.

OMHS added one run in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the bottom of the fifth while only allowing the Jaguars (3-3) to tally one more run following their first-inning outburst.

Rivers earned the win on the mound for Oak Mountain, allowing two hits and four runs in five innings while striking out seven.

Drew Rowland and Colton Smith pitched in relief to close out the game.

Rivers went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI, Gillespie went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, and Sester went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and one RBI.

Pierce had three RBI in the game, and both Connor Adams and Stephen Moraski scored two runs.

Carter Sidor and Ethan Smallwood each went 2-for-3 at the plate for SPHS.

Spain Park next visits Gadsden City at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, while Oak Mountain plays at Helena at the same time on the same day.
