MONTEVALLO – A local resident was recognized at the Montevallo City Council’s Feb. 24 meeting for her recent work at the Montevallo Recycling Center.

Sustainability Coordinator Olivia Barone presented Diane Johnson with a certificate for “her service and pride at the recycling center when there wasn’t much.”

“We really appreciate everything you’ve done,” Barone said to Johnson.

The recycling center is undergoing renovations in an effort to make it more physically manageable and financially responsible, according to an earlier press release regarding the changes.

The center’s new hours of operation, which took effect Feb. 19, are Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

The city’s Arbor Day event will be held at the center on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 9 a.m.

I really appreciate what everybody’s doing at the recycling center,” Johnson said. “In the big picture, it means a whole lot to recycle, to leave this planet to your children or grandchildren.”

In other business, the council:

  • Set a public meeting for Tuesday, March 3 at 6 p.m. at City Hall to review the city’s proposed ADA Transition Plan.
  • Heard an update on Montevallo being selected to participate in the AARP Rural Living Program.
  • Did not take action on an Ammersee Lakes street paving matter.
