CHELSEA – Chelsea Park and Rec announced that it has suspended all youth sports activities through Friday, April 3.

This decision includes all youth baseball, softball, volleyball and archery contests and practices, and was made in coordination with the Shelby County Board of Education, according to the announcement.

“Given the response nationwide over the last 24 hours regarding the COVID-19 virus, we feel it is of utmost importance to fall in line and do what we can to protect the citizens of our community,” the statement read.

The decision means that opening day for youth baseball and softball in the city, which was scheduled for Saturday, March 14, will be postponed

It also includes Chelsea’s athletic complexes and the Chelsea Community Center.

“With the decision by the [Shelby County Board of Education] to suspend all sports and extracurricular activities, we believe this is prudent to keep our children and their families safe,” Chelsea Mayor Tony Picklesimer said in a Facebook post announcing the decision. “This is our number one responsibility. We will resume all activities as soon as safe and possible. Thank you for your understanding.”
