ALABASTER — The Alabaster Arts Council announced on Friday, April 3, that Alabaster CityFest 2020, which was to be held on June 6 on the grounds of Thompson High School, has been canceled.

“While this cancellation is something our team couldn’t have imagined even a few weeks ago, the COVID-19 health crisis has affected our community with the closure of schools, business suspensions and cancellations of spring and some summer events and sports at the school and city level,” reads a release from the Arts Council. “Though our June 6 date is outside the current federal guidance for social distancing, much planning and promotion is required in intervening weeks to make CityFest the success it has been traditionally. The current restrictive climate and media landscape simply do not afford those opportunities.

“The Alabaster Arts Council has long been committed to producing a festival that is successful for both our community and our sponsors. The Council believes the best path to success for the festival is to redirect our energies to planning for Alabaster CityFest 2021.”

The Arts Council thanked event sponsors, vendors and partners for their continued commitment to the Alabaster Arts Council and Alabaster CityFest.

The release goes on to state that the Arts Council looks forward to working with its sponsors, vendors and partners again for the festival in 2021, as well as other events and programs throughout the remainder of the year.

The Alabaster Arts Council, officially incorporated as a non-profit 501c3 organization in 2007, is made up of a group of local volunteers whose mission is to advance and enrich the quality of life in the Alabaster community through the arts and art education.
