BOE approves administrators for schools, system

The Shelby County Board of Education approved three administrators in new positions and several bids for services and materials during a May 28 virtual meeting.

Mary Anderson was named the new principal of Helena Elementary School, Jan Curtis was named the new assistant principal at Oak Mountain Elementary School, and Kara Burleson was approved as the new system assistant principal to be assigned to Helena Intermediate School in the 2020-2021 school year.

Anderson has worked in public education for more than 16 years and is coming to HES from Chelsea Park Elementary School, where she served as assistant principal.

Curtis has worked in education for more than 15 years and most recently served as an administrative assistant for Shelby County Schools.

Burleson, who has worked in public education for more than 16 years, most recently served as the assistant principal at HES.

In other business, the board:

  • Approved the renewal of a bid from Kelly Services for substitute support staffing services for an additional year.
  • Approved a $19,458 bid for a career technical education program and training system.
  • Approved a $29,219 bid for a surgical table and accessories from Southwest Medical Equipment Inc. to be used by students in Chelsea High School’s new health sciences program.
  • Approved a bid for a portable classrooms lease.

•Heard an update from Facilities and Maintenance Coordinator Randy Reeves on the status of projects at several schools: Multipurpose building at Chelsea High School – 98-percent complete; at Chelsea Middle School, field access ramp – 95-percent complete and replacement fieldhouse – 80-percent complete; and multipurpose building at Vincent Middle High School – 50-percent complete.
